Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed holding direct negotiations with Ukraine on 15 May, stating that negotiations should begin immediately, without delay, in order to create lasting peace and eliminate the roots of the war. The Russian leader also stated that it is possible that negotiations could lead to a ceasefire or a new truce.
The Russian leader also said he would talk to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the details of the talks, after saying he wanted to hold them in Istanbul, Turkey. The last direct talks between Russia and Ukraine took place at the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, more than 3 years ago.
